about

A long awaited follow-up to their debut CD Ugly Beauties (Ambiances Magnétiques), Strange Attractors further defines the sound of this maturing trio, a group of virtuosic soloists carving out a singular niche in the world of creative improvisation. Texture, dynamic range, structure
and abstract lyricism abound.

Strange Attractors features ten tracks of original music - nine compositions by group members plus one group improvisation (track 10).

The tunes are at once like jazz-derived compositions, characterized by Marilyn Lerner's unique experimental harmonic sense, Matt Brubeck's facility with groove and arco splendor and Nick Fraser's musicality and ability to imply all of the above on his traps.

Formed in 2007 and named for Thelonius Monk's composition, The Ugly Beauties Trio is a configuration of three of Canada's top improvisers: Marilyn Lerner - piano, Matt Brubeck - cello and Nick Fraser - drums. The music of this trio traverses the worlds of improvised music and modern
jazz, with strong elements of contemporary classical and world music. The repertoire consists of an organic mixture of written and improvised material.

The sound of The Ugly Beauties can best be described as an intricate amalgam of abstract lyricism, swing and groove.

"...makes you forget the differences and boundaries between jazz, contemporary classical music and improvisation. These are very virtuous musicians who demonstrate their talent in a very coherent way with engaging interplay." Dolf Mulder in Vital #703 (Netherlands)

"They're all creative players, and at moments they whip up such a storm of strange textures and tones that you forget you're listening to just three acoustic instruments. " - Benjamin Boles, NOW Magazine
